Scenic Labs In The News

"The BluScenes Compendium takes the concept of video scenery and journalizes it. Rather than paying $25 per disc, you can buy a dozen discs in one fell swoop. I think this is the way to go because there are a lot of discs that you might not try otherwise, but as part of a bundle — a disc showing nothing but Lighthouses? Sure! Why not? I’m really enjoying this set! My favorite discs are the two aquarium discs, and The Fractal Plane. It’s, by far, the best ambient content that I’ve seen in a while." Brian Liu, Blu-ray Mojo in a BluScenes Review

"So far only one independent has even bothered to note that its Blu-ray supports managed copy.'The players don’t exist yet; we know that,' said Jason Rosenfeld, founder of Scenic Labs, whose Dec. 10 'BluScenes’ Coral Reef Aquarium release was the first to highlight support for managed copy. 'But there will be, and [managed copy] fits our model. The kind of content we offer plays well off a media server.' He said BluScenes’ managed copies will be free."

"Fans of serene, atmospheric background discs will definitely want to check out BluScenes' debut trio of titles. Journey Through Space, Coral Reef Aquarium and Classic Fireplace each provide hours of serene calm and sparkling 1080p visuals. And they're well engineered too; the last frame of each scene precedes the first frame, so a wisely placed cross-fade prevents harsh skips during Loop Play."

Greg Robinson E-Gear.com

"Good news, fish fans. BluScenes has released three Blu-ray discs with managed copy, so you can play Coral Reef Aquarium directly from a hard drive. Now, if only there were Blu-ray players to support [copying]."

Talking about our stance against mandatory AACS:

"Rosenfeld has a different perspective on his own business. Piracy is going to happen—that's one of his axioms, and if it's correct, it means "you're only ever hurting the people who pay for the product [when you use DRM]." In other words, you're inconveniencing your own customers."

Nate Anderson ArsTechnica.com

"Scenic Labs, [...] believes DRM is pointless* and "piracy is going to happen." So why is it even bothering? It basically has no choice. If you're creating commercial Blu-ray discs, this is the only option you get: it must include this poorly documented DRM if you want to offer a copyable version."

Mike Masnick TechDirt.com

*Note: We, at Scenic Labs, read TechDirt religiously, but wish to clarify what was picked up from the Ars Technica piece.  We believe that DRM is pointless for our products.  We respect the rights of other content owners to make their own decisions.  However, we firmly believe that we should have the right to not use DRM, just as video publishers can choose to not use Macrovision or region coding.

Mandatory DRM appears to not be targeted at consumers.  It seems, to us, that the real perceived threat is potential Pirate Blu-ray outfits.  If you require AACS on all manufactured discs, you make it much more difficult for pirate presses to operate.

Nevertheless, consumers end up getting shafted.  We believe that the right way to stop piracy operations is through the enforcement of laws (that already exist, by the way), not limiting the usefulness of products. So, we look forward to the day when players support managed copy, but we think it would be a lot easier if we weren't forced to use and pay for AACS, a DRM that can be cracked instantly with software like SlySoft AnyDVD HD.

If one can fail to see how DRM can be cracked so easily, it's plain as day why one might also ignore the needs of customers.
